Welcome to the Lawrence Family Practice Center where our specialty is you! All of our physicians are Board Certified Family Physicians. Our doctors have been trained to provide a wide spectrum of services, including obstetrics, to people of all ages.
Our mission at Lawrence Family Practice Center is to provide comprehensive, high quality, compassionate care to patients of all ages, with an emphasis on promoting healthy behaviors and developing long–term relationships with our patients and their entire family. We strive to provide these services in a competent, professional manner, treating our patients as we would want our own family members treated, with dignity and respect.
Dr. Carla Phipps
Dr. Carla Phipps is a Board-certified Family Practitioner. She graduated from the University of Kansas Medical School and completed her residency at University of Kansas Family Practice Residency. She completed an additional Obstetrical fellowship at Truman Medical School, enabling her to provide c-section delivery. She provides comprehensive primary care to the community including obstetrics, pediatrics, and menopause management.
Dr. Phipps is Director for the Laser and Cosmetic Center, whose mission is to help people feel their best at every age. The profits from this center go towards funding her other passion, missionary service. She staffs a medical clinic in Falmouth, Jamaica, has helped with Kids Alive International in the Dominican Republic, and contributes to the Mufundi Orphanage in Tanzania.
Dr. Phipps is a frequent volunteer for Health Care Access and is on the Endowment Board at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and Birthright of Lawrence. She is married to Dr. Brad Phipps, a physician here, and they have three children. When not working she loves golf; her handicap is "herself."
Dr. Bradley Phipps
Dr. Bradley Phipps, a Board-certified Family Practitioner, graduated from the University of Kansas Medical School and completed his training at University of Kansas Family Practice Residency. He provides comprehensive primary medical care to the community.
Dr. Phipps chose family practice because he enjoys taking care of all ages and treating a variety of medical problems and concerns. He likes knowing the whole family.
An enthusiastic outdoorsman, Dr. Phipps enjoys fishing, hunting, boating, and golf. He is married to Dr. Carla Phipps; they have three children.
Dr. Kimberley McKeon
Dr. Kimberley McKeon graduated from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1998. Dr. McKeon chose to complete her residency at the University of Missouri – Kansas City in order to receive well-rounded training in Family Medicine. She relocated from Warrensburg, Missouri, where she had been in practice for three years before moving to Lawrence. Dr. McKeon is Board-certified in Family Medicine and provides comprehensive primary care to the community including obstetrical, pediatric, and cosmetic laser services.
Dr. McKeon chose family practice because she enjoys treating patients of all ages. She especially enjoys providing obstetrical services to her patients and care for their newborns. She also has special interests in preventative medicine and patient education.
In her free time, Dr. McKeon enjoys relaxing with her husband and two sons, cooking, reading, and gardening.
Dr. Steven Thomsen
Dr. Steven Thomsen is a Board-certified Family Practitioner. He graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical School and completed his Family Practice Residency at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Wichita. He was in private practice in Montana before joining Lawrence Family Practice Center as a charter member in 1977. He provides comprehensive primary care to the community.
Dr. Thomsen chose family practice because he enjoys knowing and treating the entire family.
In his free time Dr. Thomsen enjoys spending time with his own family. He also enjoys golf, fishing, and gardening. Each year Dr. Thomsen takes his two youngest children on a roller coaster trip across the country. All three are known as "coaster freaks".
Dr. Melissa Kalb
Dr. Melissa Kalb, a board certified Family Physician, grew up in Lawrence. She attended Kansas State University for her undergraduate degree and the University of Kansas School of Medicine for her medical degree. Dr. Kalb recently graduated from Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency in Salina, KS. She enjoys offering obstetrical services to her patients. Dr. Kalb chose family medicine because she enjoys caring for patients of all ages.
Dr. Kalb enjoys spending time with her husband and son in her free time. She also likes to bake, cook, and run.
Miriam Slaugh, ARNP
Miriam Slaugh, a Certified Nurse Practitioner, joined our practice after graduating from Washburn University. She provides comprehensive primary medical care for children and adults. Miriam enjoys working with and educating patients with hypertension, diabetes, and cholesterol problems.
Miriam is married and has two children. When not working, she enjoys boating with her family, cooking, reading, and quilting.
Heather Yates, PA-C
Heather Yates, PA-C, graduated from the University of Kansas in 1992 with a degree in Human Biology. She completed a Master of Health Science and Physician Assistant Studies at Duke University in 1995. She has been working alongside the physicians at Lawrence Family Practice Center for the last 15 years, providing comprehensive primary care services to our patients.
Heather enjoys psychiatry, dermatology, patient education, and providing quality care to members of all types of families. When she is not working, she enjoys reading, entertaining, and spending time with her partner and their five children.
