Welcome to the Lawrence Family Practice Center where our specialty is you! All of our physicians are Board Certified Family Physicians. Our doctors have been trained to provide a wide spectrum of services, including obstetrics, to people of all ages.
Our mission at Lawrence Family Practice Center is to provide comprehensive, high quality, compassionate care to patients of all ages, with an emphasis on promoting healthy behaviors and developing long–term relationships with our patients and their entire family. We strive to provide these services in a competent, professional manner, treating our patients as we would want our own family members treated, with dignity and respect.
Carla Phipps, MD
Dr Carla Phipps graduated from The University of Kansas school of Medicine and is board certified in Family Practice as well as Obesity Medicine. She and her husband, Dr Brad Phipps, who recently retired from our practice, are longstanding Lawrence residents, raised their 3 children here, and all are medical professionals. Her son, Dr Blake Phipps joined our clinic in 2018.
Dr Carla has been a passionate supporter of affordable healthcare efforts through volunteer work locally and abroad. She has had a mission clinic in Jamaica for almost 20 years, started a new medical mission with the Propel Foundation in Uganda in 2015, has worked with Kids Alive and supported the Mufundi Ophanage in Tanzania. She does this through her other venture, the Laser and Cosmetic Center, also in our clinic. All profits are donated.
Being a part of a patient’s family through caring for infants to grandparents is a privilege and an honor. I have been blessed with having a job that feeds my soul!
Melissa Kalb, MD
Dr. Melissa Kalb, a board certified Family Physician, grew up in Lawrence. She attended Kansas State University for her undergraduate degree and the University of Kansas School of Medicine for her medical degree. Dr. Kalb recently graduated from Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency in Salina, KS. She enjoys offering obstetrical services to her patients. Dr. Kalb chose family medicine because she enjoys caring for patients of all ages.
Dr. Kalb enjoys spending time with her husband and son in her free time. She also likes to bake, cook, and run.
Chad Johanning, MD
Dr. Chad Johanning, Board-certified in Family Medicine, grew up in Atchison, KS. He is a proud Jayhawk and two-time graduate with degrees in Biology and Medicine from the University of Kansas. Dr. Johanning completed his residency training at Via Christi Family Medicine Residency in Wichita where he received extensive procedural training in addition to Family Medicine. Prior to joining Lawrence Family Practice Center in June 2014, Dr. Johanning practiced in Atchison, KS for over 6 years. Dr. Johanning enjoys obstetrics, including high risk and c-section deliveries, pediatric and well child care, colonoscopy screenings and everything about being a family physician.
In addition to private practice, Dr. Johanning volunteers at the KU Family Medicine residency program in Kansas City and is involved with state leadership for the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians. During his time in Atchison, Dr. Johanning was instrumental in founding Atchison Community Health Clinic which provides services to individuals unable to afford health insurance.
In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and son. Interests include running, golfing, skiing and traveling to new and exciting places.
Kyle Miller, MD
Dr. Kyle Miller, a board certified family physician, grew up in Derby, Kansas. He attended Newman University where he received a biochemistry degree and then received his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Dr. Miller then graduated from the Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency in Salina, KS where he served as the chief resident. Dr. Miller enjoys seeing patients of all ages from pediatric patients to the elderly.
In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family and loves to run and practice different types of yoga - especially Ashtanga Yoga. He is married to Dr. Amanda Miller and has one son.
Amanda Miller, MD
Dr. Amanda Miller joined our team in the fall of 2017. She is originally from Derby, Kansas and attended KU Medical School. She completed her residency training along with her husband at Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency in Salina, Kansas. Her practice encompasses all age groups including Obstetrics. Her and her husband, Dr. Kyle Miller have one young son who they enjoy spending most all their free time with. Dr. Miller enjoys traveling, reading, and exploring all the diverse and unique eateries of Lawrence.
Blake Phipps, MD
Raised as a Jayhawk by Drs. Brad and Carla Phipps, who have a legacy of providing quality health care for 30 plus years at Lawrence Family Practice Center, Dr. Blake Phipps considers it a dream come true to be joining the practice.
Dr. Phipps, a board certified family physician, enjoys seeing patients of all ages but has a special interest in obstetrics. He attended undergraduate and medical school at The University of Kansas and his residency was in Family Medicine at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, TX. It is the largest Family Medicine program in the country and is ranked as a top 5 program nationally. He stayed an additional year to complete a fellowship in Maternal Child Health, which provided training in higher risk pediatric and obstetrical medicine. This included training in obstetrical ultrasounds, cesarean deliveries, tubal ligations and a variety of other skills tailored to women’s health and family planning- even vasectomies. Although he has a focus in obstetrics Dr. Phipps enjoys procedures of all kinds including endoscopy (EGD’s and colonoscopies) as well as outpatient lump and bump removal. He takes pride in doing and seeing it all.
Dr. Phipps is a diehard KU fan. He enjoys cooking, hunting and fishing with his father and of course spending time with his wife Ashley and their two dogs, Oliver and Maggie."
Jess Hampton, PA-C
Jessica Hampton is a board-certified Physician Assistant who grew up in Dodge City, KS. She began working at Lawrence Family Practice Center as a receptionist in 2006 while completing her undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Kansas. Jessica then worked as a medical assistant for Dr. Brad Phipps and Dr. Kimberley McKeon before moving to Norfolk, VA, to attend Eastern Virginia Medical School, where she received her Master of Physician Assistant degree in June 2018.
In the past, Jessica has volunteered at Health Care Access and Heartland Community Health Center, and has been on a mission trip to Haiti. In her spare time, she enjoys working out, dancing, attending country music concerts, going to church, watching KU basketball games, and spending time with her friends and family that live throughout the state of Kansas.
Jessica is excited to return to the practice and is looking forward to treating a variety of patients, especially in the areas of dermatology and orthopedics.
